Dave Shaw’s Classroom Story: For the love of revitalising reading
Biff, Chip and Kipper were in school, learning to read. Biff was a good reader but didn’t enjoy it. Kipper found reading difficult. Mrs May was trying to engage the children and promote a love of reading. Suddenly the magic key began to glow…
Biff, Chip and Kipper had arrived at Spire Junior School!
“What, why are we at school! We were already at school! This isn’t a magical adventure!”
Biff, Chip and Kipper went to explore the school anyway…
“WOW, is this a vending machine full of books?!”
“Hello kids, I bet you’re wondering what this is!”
This is our reading vending machine that we’ve recently put in place at school. We bought it off ebay but after a bit of TLC and a few lights I’m sure you’ll you’ll agree it looks great.
Here at Spire we encourage independence so our children take the responsibility to read three times to an adult at home. If the children do this, they get a raffle ticket and are entered into a weekly prize draw. The lucky winners then get a token that they can spend in the machine.
“This inspirational idea has helped our children develop a love of learning and has promoted reading throughout the school.”
They even get a hot chocolate, so they can spend their Friday afternoon enjoying some time in the library getting lost in their new book.
